Was My Blog Hacked?

April 11th, 2008 · 3 Comments · News

Got a shock when I visited this blog in the morning and found a parse error in my wp-config.php file. As far as I can remember, the last day that I edited it was when I was upgrading to WordPress 2.5. Since then 3 days had past and nothing had happened, till today. :S

It was just weird. When I opened up the wp-config.php, the last few lines were incomplete.

define('ABSPATH', dirname(__FILE

Well I simply copied from the backed up files that I had and it is working file now.

define('ABSPATH', dirname(__FILE__).'/');
require_once(ABSPATH.'wp-settings.php');
?>

What’s worrying me is the integrity of my blog. :(

Was it hacked?
Were my credentials stolen?

Anyone with similar experience before?

    Not saying that it wasn’t hacked, but I would think if they were going to hack your site, they’d have dropped a few links into the site (which is apparently what they usually do), and I didn’t see any when checking the source. Another thing to do is download beyond compare, and tell it to compare all remote files with all local files and it’ll show any differences between the files. Did you happen to check the “last changed” date of the file before you overwrote it? That would at least tell you if there was something a little strange going on (as they usually run the scripts early in the morning so people won’t notice the change until later)

    Many thanks Gareth. I’m still pretty noob with all this so was at quite a loss. You’ve been a great help. :)

    I must have been too anxious to get everything up and running so I dint notice the “last changed” date. Hopefully there’s no next time, but if there is, I’ll now know what to look out for. ;)
